Toward Harmonized Adult Vaccination Schedules Across Canada

Respiratory infections pose a significant health and economic burden across Canada, placing increasing strain on the healthcare systems. As Canada’s demographic profile shifts, older adults, one of the fastest-growing populations, face heightened risks of severe illness, complications, and hospitalization. Evidence suggests that every dollar invested in adult immunization yields a return of more than three times its value in combined health and economic benefits. Despite clear benefits, vaccine-preventable respiratory diseases continue to cause avoidable hospitalizations, deaths, and system strain.

The Toward Harmonized Adult Vaccination Schedules Across Canada is a national policy initiative that addresses inconsistencies in adult respiratory vaccination eligibility and access across provinces and territories. By assessing current variations and engaging key stakeholders, the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) aims to advance coordinated, evidence-based policy solutions that support greater alignment in vaccination schedules nationwide.

Harmonization is essential to reducing inequities, improving clarity for healthcare providers and the public, and increasing overall adult vaccination uptake, ultimately strengthening Canada’s public health system and ensuring equitable protection for all adults.
