NCDs and Immunisation – Advancing Coordinated Advocacy and Action
Respiratory infections such as influenza and COVID-19 are an under-recognised contributor to the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Growing evidence shows they can trigger acute cardiovascular events, exacerbate chronic conditions, and contribute to avoidable hospitalisation and loss of independence, particularly among older adults. Yet adult immunisation continues to be viewed primarily through the lens of infectious disease prevention, rather than also as an important component of comprehensive NCD prevention, management, and care.
To explore the intersection between adult immunisation and NCD prevention, the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) convened a multistakeholder roundtable bringing together representatives from the immunisation, cardiovascular, respiratory, NCD, and healthy ageing communities.
The resulting Consensus Statement provides a shared foundation for advancing adult immunisation as an important component of healthier ageing, NCD prevention, management, and care.
